With Arsenal, Schalke and Manchester United awaiting them after the Hull fixture, Sunday’s game against the Tigers becomes a must win for Mark Hughes in the eyes of football pundits and fans alike. City have lost their last three Premiership games and are currently thirteenth in the table.
Manchester City lost 1-2 at home to Tottenham last week, with a Darren Bent brace giving the visitors a win after Robinho had fired City into a 16th minute lead. The turning point of the game was when the referee gave Gelson Fernandes his marching orders. The Swiss midfielder, along with skipper Richard Dunne will miss this game as a result of their suspension. Talal Ben Haim and Nedum Onouha are the two immediate choices to replace Dunne in the centre of defence. Vincent Kompany should return to strengthen the midfield, with Dietmar Hamann likely to make way for him. We will see Robinho on the left, Shaun Wright Phillips on the right, with Elano and Jo/Benjani attacking upfront.
Like City, Hull have also lost their last three Premiership games. But because of their excellent start to the season, Phil Brown’s side still remain sixth in the table with twenty points to their name. Hull lost to Bolton Wanderers last Saturday, with Matthew Taylor scoring the winner for the Trotters. But this is a test of their character, and should they fail to pass it, they will find themselves lying in mid table before long. Hull’s players will be keen to defy their critics, who kept saying that it was a matter of time before their bubble burst. One thing you need to remember is that two of those three defeats came against Manchester United and Chelsea. Geovanni has been their standout player this season, and he was a former Citizen.
City are still considered favourites to win this game despite being lower in the league. I’d tip this to be a 2-2, with Cousin, Geovanni, Benjani and Robinho scoring.
