Game : Bolton Wanderers vs Liverpool FC
Competition : English Premier League
Venue : Reebok Stadium, Bolton
Time : 12.45 UK Time
Date : 15 November 2008
Bolton will look to add Liverpool to their recent list of scalps when they welcome Rafa Benitez’s side to the Reebok on Saturday afternoon. Recent surprise wins over Manchester City and Hull City have pulled Gary Megson’s side out of the relegation zone and they are currently in eleventh place, fifteen points behind Liverpool in the league table.
Bolton beat Phil Brown’s Hull City 1-0 last weekend, with Matthew Taylor scoring the only goal of the game. Keeper Jussi Jaaskelainen was also in fine form, producing a string of saves to deny the Tigers a point. This is the first time Bolton have achieved back to back victories since April 2008, and they will go into this game believing that they can take the game to Liverpool. Kevin Nolan, who missed the game against Hull as he was suspended, returns for this game. Former Bolton boss Sammy Lee will also be present at this game, but as part of the visiting contigent. He is Benitez’s assistant currently.
Liverpool fielded a second string side against Tottenham in the League Cup on Wednesday, and were beaten 4-2, with Roman Pavlyuchenko and Frazer Campbell scoring two apiece for Spurs. Damien Plessis and Sami Hyypia scored for Liverpool from Ryan Babel corners, but it was not enough to stop Spurs. Fernando Torres played for fifty minutes against Spurs, and is likely to start against Bolton. This will mean a selection headache for Benitez, who must now decide whether to play both Keane and Torres upfront, which would mean sacrificing one midfield player. Liverpool have been in excellent form in the league, and beat West Bromwich Albion 3-0 last weekend, with Robbie Keane scoring twice and Alvaro Arbeloa adding one in injury time. Unlike some other Premiership sides, Liverpool can cope with the physical aspect of Bolton’s play, and with their key players coming back after a week’s rest, they should start as favourites.
The corresponding fixture last season ended 3-1 to Liverpool, with Ryan Babel and Fabio Aurelio both scoring. Jussi Jaaskelainen scored a bizarre own goal in that clash, and he will be keen to erase any memories of it. Liverpool to win this 2-0, with Torres and Kuyt scoring.
