New England Patriots @ New York Jets

Posted on | September 13, 2006 | No Comments

Week 2 of the NFL season will feature a match up of division rivals looking to improve to 2-0. Both teams won their opening game, New England beat Buffalo 19-17 and New York beat Tennessee 23-17.

The QB match up will be an interesting one. Week one neither played like themselves. Tom Brady who is usually amazing had a horrible game, completing just 11 of 23 passes. Chad Pennington who is just a mediocre QB played phenomenal, completing 24 of 33 passes, 319 yards, 2 TD’s, and 0 interceptions. “Chad has done a great job in preparing himself and getting himself back to the point of being our starting quarterback,” Jets receiver Laveranues Coles said. “I’m just happy that he now has a game under his belt and showed he’s back.” Keep in mind neither were playing a great defense.

It look like New England’s new approach to running the ball worked. The last few years Corey Dillion has been the feature back, however this year he is splitting time with the rookie Laurence Maroney. As a team New England ran for 183 yards.

New England has a much better defense than New York. After allowing 17 points to Buffalo in the 1st half week one, them held them scoreless in the 2nd half and also recorded the game winning safety. Warren’s game-winning safety with 8:33 left completed a comeback from a very poor start that had the Patriots trailing 17-7 at halftime. New York allowed 16 point in the 4th quarter to Tennessee, but my main concern is that they have no playmakers on the defensive.

Predicting this game is pretty simple in my opinion. Despite the fact that Chad Pennington played great week 1, do not look for that to continue. New England is a better and more complex defense than Tennessee. The loss of Curtis Martin will really hurt the Jets running offense, it showed week one. As a team they ran for only 91, which is atrocious. Even though New England won week 1, they did not play well. “It’s no way to start the season, but we recovered and came back and put together a nice drive after that,” said Brady, who was disappointed with his performance week one. They will play more efficient this week, and cruise to an easy win.
