MLB: Wrapping Up and Looking Forward

And that concludes another Major League Baseball season. The Philadelphia Phillies are the Champions and they deserve it.
The Tampa Bay Rays had a great season but falling short of the title is no consolation. Sure, they came from worst to first in the AL but they didn’t get the job done. So they have to be disappointed.
Speaking of disappointed, that would pretty well sum-up the New York Yankees, the New York Mets, and the Detroit Tigers. These are three teams that looked like shoe-ins for the playoffs but they all failed by the end of the season. The Tigers were horrible all season, the Yankees couldn’t win enough after the All-Star Break and the Mets collapsed late once again.
So this year has been a lot of fun to watch… even if it was a bit anti-climactic. And I think baseball proved that people still love the game and still love to come out to the ball parks.
But I also think baseball proved that it’s a very slippery slope. And they’re capable of screwing things up.
A couple things that come to mind are the World Series rain debacle and instant replay. Not to mention the horrible umpiring that occurred throughout the season and in the World Series. The umps clearly missed an obvious call that went against the Rays and the strike zone for Rays’ pitchers often seemed smaller than the stroke zone for the Phillies.
So MLB has to make sure they use this off season to improve the game as much as possible.
And in the off season we’ll also wait and see just how much money the Yankees and the Red Sox spend on free agents. Something tells me the Yankees will go crazy with spending money. Because they have to. They’re just too old and not talented enough to compete with the Red Sox or the Rays right now.
So that’s what we’ll look for as we move forward into the off season and begin to look forward to next year.
