The league positions mentioned at the top are perfectly correct. Hull City are ahead of Manchester United in the Premiership table going into this weekend’s clash. But United do have a game in hand, and a victory here would see them jump over Hull in the table.

Defending champions Manchester United have been slow to start off, and are currently eight points behind leaders Liverpool. Their only loss was to the Reds, but the three draws that they have accumulated have not really helped their cause. Cristiano Ronaldo, recently named FifPro player of the year scored both goals as United cruised past West Ham 2-0 in their midweek fixture. The game saw Carlos Tevez start alongside Dimitar Berbatov, and United were hardly troubled by Gianfranco Zola’s side. United should have attacked a little more in the second half though, as assistant Mike Phelan pointed out after the game. Michael Carrick also made his return from injury as a second half substitute. Rafael replaced Wes Brown at right back. The talking point of the game was undoubtedly Berbatov’s little piece of magic to set Ronaldo up for the second goal- he made James Collins look an idiot.

Hull have been the surprise package of the Premiership so far, but a loss at home at Chelsea on Wednesday would have deflated them a little bit. The loss was not unexpected, but a defeat still hurts- especially when it breaks a four game unbeaten run. And despite being higher than United in the table, Phil Brown’s men know very well that they are underdogs going into this game. A wonderful chipped goal from Frank Lampard in the 3rd minute proved difficult to recover from, and second half strikes from Nicolas Anelka and Florent Malouda ensured that Hull would not claim another London club’s scalp this season.

The last time these two clubs met was some twenty years back in the League Cup, with United win 6-0 on aggregate. United are the stronger side, and this game, like the one against Chelsea, will derail Hull’s campaign a bit. Doing another Arsenal might be asking too much of Hull. United to cruise through 2-0, with Ronaldo and Rooney/ Berbatov scoring.
