MLB: Rain Won’t Go Away

Why did Major League Baseball even start that game last night? It was pouring rain. The forecast called for constant pouring rain well into the night and probably into the morning. So why did Bud Selig allow the show to go on. Why did he make the players stand out there in the wind and rain and battle to a 2-2 tie into the sixth inning?
Well, because of the money of course. Because of the National television audience. Because Selig puts everything ahead of baseball and the players. And he only puts the game first when he’s absolutely forced to do so (see steroid debacle).
Funny that the game kept going through horrible conditions until the Rays were able to tie it up in the 6th inning. Then suddenly the game was called – postponed. If the Rays hadn’t tied it up and they called the game after 4 and a 1/2 innings then that would have been the game and that would have been the entire World Series. Something tells me if the Rays hadn’t gotten that one run then they would’ve kept playing until the end of nine innings or until they were tied.
See, Selig saw a chance to get a two for one. He could have the game begin in the rain, then postpone the game, and get the rest of it played the next day. And he didn’t want to not play the game, and he didn’t want the game to be decided in less than a whole game.
Imagine the outcry then? If they played the game despite the weather and then the game was caleld early and either team was awarded the win.
Certainly what happens favors the Rays. They threw their best pitcher, Hammels, and now he’s done. The only positive for the Phillies might be that they might be able to get a couple innings out of Hammels in Game Seven.
So we’ll see what happens in the half game (or a little less) that will be played today. But one thing is for sure, Bud Selig screwed up again.
