Sheffield Wednesday v Plymouth Preview

Any Sheffield Wednesday fan is likely to hold this match in fairly high regard, with former Owls boss Paul Sturrock now managing Plymouth for a second time round. Sturrock is a fans favorite at Hillsborough having masterminded their promotion from League One, yet he’ll be doing his old side no favors as he looks to get Plymouth back on track following two defeats in the last three games.
It’s not been a great few weeks for Wednesday either. Although Owls fans still cannot hold their delight in after their derby victory against Sheffield United, they’ve lost a lot of games recently and one of them was another local game against Barnsley. They were thrashed 4-0 by Plymouth a few weeks ago and having also lost to the Tykes and Birmingham in the meantime, they’re quickly dropping down the table. However, all of those three defeats have come away from home and that seems to be their downfall. They’ve got some of the worst form in the league on the road and with Plymouth being a side who are also tipped to struggle this season, they’ll fancy themselves on the Hillsborough turf.
Plymouth’s campaign has been a mixed one to say the least and they have been one of the yoyo teams of the division. At one point they were rock bottom, only to rise into the play offs and now to mature into a mid table position. There’s no doubt that on paper, they’ve perhaps got one of the weaker sides in the league. However, Paul Sturrock is renowned for making his teams work hard and with the likes of Rory Fallon and Emile Mpenza providing his team with an extremely physical outlook, they’re definitely not an easy side to play against. Fallon in particular has been a key player this term, with the former Swansea man knocking three goals in his last six games.
It’s mixed news for Brian Laws in relation to team news, with the bad news being that Marcus Tudgay looks set to miss out through a groin problem. However, Laws is hopeful on James O’Connor and Mark Beevers, while fans favorite Akpo Sodje may get a start after his long term injury. Plymouth don’t have much to shout about with Matt Doumbe and Emile Mpenza both set to miss with foot and knee injuries respectively. Other than that Paul Sturrock doesn’t have any other problems, although he is tipped to change things after their defeat at the weekend.
In terms of a prediction, we’ll go for a Wednesday win. They may not be in the best of form of late, but most of their bad results have been away this season and they’ve been quite solid on their own patch. However, Plymouth caused them problems last time and we expect them to put up another decent fight – 3-2.
