Doncaster v Barnsley Preview

Barnsley managed to climb out of the bottom three for the first time in months on Saturday, while Doncaster are in real trouble having collected just one point from their last nine games. Donny visited Oakwell only a month ago and were thumped 4-1, so they’ll be desperate for revenge to close the gap on the Tykes.
Doncaster’s form at the moment is nothing short of horrific and after starting the season so well, Sean O’Driscoll will be wondering what’s gone wrong. Rovers surprised all at the start of the campaign with a opening day win over Derby followed by a draw against Cardiff. Since those first weeks, it’s all gone downhill though. It’s been evident since day one that they haven’t got a natural goal scorer in there but unfortunately for O’Driscoll, his defence seems to be letting him down as well. Donny have one of the worst records at the back in the division and after Barnsley notched four against them just a few weeks ago, that needs sorting immediately unless they want to suffer the same fate.
Recent form for Barnsley hasn’t been too bad at all and it seems as though things are finally coming together for Simon Davey. They managed to thrash Donny a few weeks ago, before then recording a win over Sheffield Wednesday and a good draw with Bristol City. Those fans who attended the Bristol City game claimed that they were desperately unlucky not to get all the points in that one and looking at the stats, that seems correct. If anything will hold the Tykes back this season it will be their lack of goals and if they are to overcome Donny again, they must see their strikers perform better than they did at the weekend. First choice front pair Jon Macken and Iain Hume both missed numerous sitters and if Davey’s men are to stay out of the bottom three, that has to change.
As for team news, home side Donny will be without midfielder Brian Stock who is ruled out through suspension. Elsewhere, Adam Lockwood and James Chambers will miss out with back and ankle injuries respectively, while James O’Connor is doubtful with a foot problem. It’s a different story for visitors Barnsley with Simon Davey having absolutely no new injury concerns. There were early doubts over Iain Hume, Darren Moore and Stephen Foster, but they’ve come through the past few days fine and look likely to keep their places.
Despite Doncaster’s dismal form, there’s no getting away from the fact that away from home Barnsley are pretty dreadful as well. We think that with pressure mounting, this could prove a turning point and they’ll take advantage of the Tykes’ travelling troubles. We’ll predict a 2-1 win for O’Driscoll’s men.
