Barnsley v Sheffield Wednesday Preview

Any Yorkshire derby is going to be an entertaining game and with Sheffield Wednesday just coming off the back of a victory over fierce neighbors Sheffield United, they’re going to be desperate to try and pull off another local victory. The Owls are now into the play off places yet it’s a different story for Barnsley, who are still stuck in the bottom three after a horrific 3-0 defeat to Crystal Palace on Saturday.
Every week we seem to be saying that Tykes manager Simon Davey has a lot of pressure on his shoulders and if things continue the way they are doing, you’d have to imagine he’ll be one of the next managers axed. Many of the Barnsley fans have completely lost confidence in him and should they lose comfortably to Wednesday on Tuesday, that might be a stretch too far for Oakwell chiefs. A 4-1 victory over local rivals Doncaster bought Davey some time a fortnight ago, but live on television on Saturday night the Tykes just caved in and looked a shadow of the side that did so well in the F.A. Cup last season. With the likes of Anderson de Silva and Heinz Muller returning to action Barnsley now have all of their key players back and there can be no excuses for anymore results like Saturday’s.
It couldn’t be any different for Sheffield Wednesday who are experiencing a start that nobody expected. The Owls now sit in 5th position after their Steel City win and with several key players returning to the fold, things are looking rosy for Brian Laws’ men. In the match against Sheffield United they were extremely impressive and even though they were up against ten men for a lot of the game, they could have put more than just the one goal past their neighbors. Considering the dreadful start they endured last season, Laws must be absolutely thrilled with their current situation and will be hoping for a second successive derby victory on Tuesday night.
One good thing for Simon Davey is that he doesn’t have any new injury problems after Saturday’s defeat. Darren Moore is tipped to come into the side after completing a one match suspension, while midfielder Hugo Colace could also come in after regaining full fitness. As for Sheffield Wednesday, Brian Laws has the dilemma of whether or not to throw Akpo Sodje and Francis Jeffers in – both who have been struggling with long term injuries. After being bizarrely sent off after kicking a water bottle on Sunday, Jermaine Johnson won’t play but Laws has Wade Small and Etienne Esajas who can both act as direct replacements.
As for a prediction, on current form we should be going for an away win. However, Barnsley have been good at home under Davey and whenever he’s been under pressure before his team have grinded out a result. We’ll go for a 0-0 draw in this one.
