NFL: Are the Redskins This Good?

As we make our way through another week of football, we still have a couple great games to be played – one on Sunday night between the Pittsburgh Steelers and the Jacksonville Jaguars and one on Monday night between the New Orleans Saints and the Minnesota Vikings.

And there were certainly a few surprises on Sunday. I’ll discuss a few of them tomorrow. But the game that stood out the most to me has to be the Washington Redskins beating the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Skins were coming off a huge win in Dallas last week. And though they beat Dallas in Dallas and it was a good win for them, I still wasn’t that impressed. As I mentioned in a previous blog, the Cowboys played about as bad as they could play and the Skins played about as well as they could play, yet the game was decided by just 2 points.

So, I thought the Skins would lose to Philly. I thought that the Eagles would make sure they beat the Skins. And the game begin with the Eagles jumping out to a 14-0 lead. So I thought I was absolutely right.

But then the Eagles fell apart and the Redskins started pushing around the Eagles. And the Skins pushed and pushed the Eagles right out of the Linc. And the Skins won the game and now they are looking great.

They’ve played all three NFC East division foes on the road and come away with 2 huge wins.

But are the Skins really this good?

Well, I don’t know the answer to that. To be honest, no one does, even though people on DC will proclaim their Skins champs this week.

But the Skins do have a scheme on their side that coaches don’t know much about yet. With each game, teams will get a chance to learn to adapt to the scheme. But the right now there simpy isn’t enough there. So the Skins are a step ahead of everyone.

How long will they stay ahead? Who knows? Certainly the Skins have talent, but something tells me that they will hit a tough stretch before too long. But it probably won’t be until the end of the season.

The answer is that no one knows if the Skins are really as good as their 4-1 record indicates. We certainly know that the Eagles let this one slip away and are banged up once again. The Skins are surely contenders and not pretenders as they host the Rams next week which will be an easy win for them. You never know in the NFC East and second place could always mean a Wild Card birth in the playoffs.
