MLB: Cubs in All Sorts of Trouble
I knew there would be a lot of pressure. And I knew that the fans would make it even worse. But I had no idea it would be this bad.
Obviously the Chicago Cubs had a ton of pressure on them in the playoffs. It’s been 100 years since they won the World Series and their fans feel like they are cursed.
So when the Cubs won nearly 100 games this season, cruised to an NL Central championship, and looked like the best team in the NL (by far), the pressure to perform mounted.
I knew the fans would be nervous but I had no idea they would look so frantic in the stands. I mean, it is unbelivable. The fans have that look of dread before the first pitch is even thrown. And then as soon as the Cubs get down a couple runs, you would think the fans are witnessing a funeral. it’s unreal!
So, the fans are worse than I though they’d be and Lou Pinella, who I thought would insulate his team, simply can’t stand-up to all that negativity. Lou is a great manager, but I’m not sure any manager (except perhaps Joe Torre) could still get his team to perform.
The bad thing is the Cubs are staring at the Dodgers, managed by Joe Torre, on the other side,. The Dodgers are playing loose and they are playing great ball. Meanwhile, the Cubs are playing like a bad college team. They aren’t hitting and they’re committing errors left and right. If the Cubs played like this diring the regular season they wouldn’t have won more than 70 games. No way.
So now the Cubs will head to Los Angeles where the pressure won’t be nearly as great. Well, they’ll still be under pressure but at least they won’t have to look into the stands and see a bunch of “fans” looking like ghosts with expressions that look like they’re witnessing a horrible car accident.
