MLB: Not So Fast

Posted on | September 29, 2008 | No Comments

While almost everything has been decided for the MLB 2008 regular season, there is still one more playoff spot to be claimed. But first let’s get to the decided stuff.

We now know seven of the eight teams that will compete for the World Series. And we also know that the games will begin on October 1st and October 2nd.

We know the Tampa Bay Rays are champions of the AL East, the Anaheim Angels are AL West champs, and the Boston Red Sox are the Wild Card team. We also know the Red Sox will take on the Angels beginning on Octover 1st.

Over in the National League, we know that the Los Angeles Dodgers have won the NL West and they will play the Chicago Cubs (the winner of the NL Central) in the very first playoff game on October 1st. We also know that the New York Mets blew it again. So the Philadelphia Phillies won the NL East for the second straight season and they will play the Wild Card winner, the Milwaukee Brewers.

So the only division left up in the air is the AL Central. And that division might be decided today, or it might not be.

The Chicago White Sox have to make-up their game against the Detroit Tigers. If the White Sox win then they tie the Twins and need to have a playoff game to decide the winner. If they lose to the Tigers then the Twins will be the champs and they’ll then move on to play against the Tampa Bay Rays on October 2nd.

You would think the White Sox would roll over the Tigers but don’t bet on it. The Tigers just took two of three from the Rays and perhaps the only way for them to at least feel a little bit better about their disastrous season. And the White Sox haven’t been playing good baseball so they just might fall flat on their face.

But I do think the White Sox will win this game and I do think we’ll see a one game playoff tomorrow.
