NFL: Happening Around the NFL

Posted on | September 24, 2008 | No Comments

Usually the middle of the week is the down time for the NFL. Monday night is a couple days removed. The weekend is still a long way away. And teams are just getting around to preparing for their next games.

But this week, on Wednesday morning, two huge pieces of news have broken. One has to do with a General Manager and the other one has to do with a star receiver.

In Detroit, it looks like GM Matt Millen is finally going to be fired. What took so long?

Since Milled arrived at the Lions front office this team has been nothing but horrible. Millen took was was a slightly below average team and made them into one of the worst teams in the NFL year in and year out.

Starting with his drafting a wide receiver in the first round three years in a row, and ending with his inability to link draft picks and free agents into a good team, Millen has been a failure every step of the way. How he’s lasted this long is the only mystery here. The job Millen has done was obvious four years ago – it was as bad a job as any GM could do.

The other big strory of the day comes out of Giants land. Plaxico Burress was suspended for two weeks for insubordination. He failed to show-up for two days and he didn’t return many phone calls the team made to him tok try to find out where he was.

Now, this suspension isn’t quite so bad becuase the Giants have a bye week this week. But it will mean the Burress misses next week’s game. What will Eli do without his favorite target? We will soon see.

This actually may point to a larger problem with Burress. Since putting this Giants team on his back last year, and finding that Eli was the one with all the credit, Burress seems like he’s a bit ticked. Is he? Who knows. But there has to be a reason why he failed to show-up at the Giants facility and failed to return phone calls.

Heaven forbid anyone in the media call him a selfish player. But watch out, he may be ready to cause even more trouble.
