MLB: Mets and Phillies Surging Ahead
Posted on | September 20, 2008 | No Comments
Yes, that’s right, both the Mets and the Phillies are surging forward right now.
The New York Mets have responded to losing first place in the National League East by winning three straight games. So the Mets have now retaken the lead by a half game.
But you can bet the Phillies aren’t done yet. They will still make another run for the NL East. But even if they don’t take first in the NL East, they’re still looking great for winning the Wild Card. That’s because the Brewers are fading away right now. Firing their manager hasn’t done any good yet, and they’re now two games back in the Wild Card race.
Meanwhile, in races in the American League, the Rays thumped the Minnesota Twins 11-1 to hold on to their game and a half lead over the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox beat the Toronto Blue Jays 4-3.
Since the Twins lost to the Rays, they’re now two and a half games behind the Chicago White Sox in the AL Central. Of course these two teams have a huge series coming up this week, but the Twins need to stay within striking distance if they want the series to mean anything. If they drop back another game and fall three and a half games behind the White Sox then the series this week won’t mean anything.
Of course, if the Twins get the best of the Rays these next two games then that will mean the Rays lost the last two. And that will create an opening for the Red Sox to take over the lead in the AL East. So either way, we will have one heck of a race going on this week.
And that’s really what it comes down to as we start to look at the last week of the baseball season. There will certainly be an exciting finish or two. There should be an exciting finish in the American League and there should be an exciting finish in the National League.
