MLB: Rays Are Caught… Races Are a Mess

Posted on | September 16, 2008 | No Comments

Well, it finally happened. The Boston Red Sox have caught the Tampa Bay Rays. Technically the Rays are still a couple percentage points ahead thanks to having played two less games, but that won’t matter if the Red Sox win this series.

The Red Sox got off to a great start in the series on Monday night by slapping the Rays 13-5. At times it seemed like the little brother playing against the bigger brother. And the little brother (the Rays) just aren’t ready to step-up with the big boys yet.

But this series isn’t over and neither is the AL East race. But the Red Sox put a serious hurt on the Rays Monday. Now we’ll see if the Rays can bounce back once again.

Meanwhile, some of the playoff races are an absolute mess with just about a dozen or so games left to play. But before we talk about what we don’t know, let’s cover what we do know.

We do know that the Rays and the Red Sox are going to the playoffs, one as the AL East winner and the other as the Wild Card. We also know the Angels have won the AL West.

We also know that the Chicago Cubs have won the NL Central and the Dodgers will win the NL West.

What we don’t know is the winner of the AL Central, the NL East, and the NL Wild Card.

In the AL Central the Minnesota Twins and the Chicago White Sox have battled it out all season. While neither one of them are playing good ball right now, one of them will go to the playoffs. Right now it looks like the Chicago White Sox but they’re only a game and half ahead of the Twins.

In the NL East, I have serious concerns about the Mets. Their bullpen is horrible. And suddenly the Phillies have closed to within a half game. Looks like the Mets may collapse again.

And in the Wild Card race, the Brewers have collapsed and now they’ve fired their manager. The Phillies are tied for the Brewers and the Astros are just two and half back. So, perhaps the Mets can take home the Wild Card if they lose the East.

Who knows? I sure don’t. But I would guess that the Phillies will take the East, the Brewers will do just enough to take the Wild Card, the Twins will win the AL Central (I’m sticking by them) and the Mets will go home again.
