MLB: National League Excitement
Okay, I’ll admit it. I’ve been hard on the National League this year. Afterall, they have the worst division in baseball, the NL West, and quite possibly the worst division ever. They also haven’t had more than one team look very impressive over the long haul.
The Chicago Cubs have looked really good all season, and the Brewers, Mets, and Phillies have looked half-decent for most of the season. But that doesn’t compare to the American League which has a handful of teams that are better than any team in the National League.
But the NL is quickly changing my mind. Sure, they still might not have the best teams in baseball, but they have a lot of good teams and those teams are all fighting for playoff spots right now.
The biggest surprise is really in the NL Central and the NL Wild Card race. The Cubs looked like they had things sewn up a few weeks ago. They were easily rolling toward the Central crown. And the Brewers were going to take the Wild Card with even more ease.
But not things aren’t so clear.
The Cubs and Brewers have stumbled and the Phillies, Cardinals, and Astros are charging hard. Yes, you did read the Astros. They are charging hard. In fact, as the weekend series begin the Astros are just 3 games behind the Brewers in the Wild Card race. They’re tied with the Phillies and the Phillies re playing the Brewers, the team leading the Wild Card race right now.
So hold onto your hats, this is going to be a wild ride.
Speaking of a wild ride, how many saves will Francisco Rodriguez end-up with this year? He just tied the saves record by collecting his 57th save on Thursday night. He will surely make it to 60. But what about 65? And he could be possibly still make it to 70? Probably not. But, what an accomplishment! And just before he becomes a free agend too.
That’s really all the excitement they have left in Anaheim right now. Well, until the playoffs start that is.
But until the playoffs, many other teams have a lot of important baseball to play. And it’s going to be a lot of fun to watch.
