NFL: Trials of Vince Young

Posted on | September 11, 2008 | No Comments

As the NFL gears up for Week 2 games, there are already a few very interesting story lines. Two of the biggest storylines right now involve two injured quarterbacks.

The first story involves the Tennessee Titans quarterback, Vince Young. Coming out of Texas Young seemed to have it all. He was big, athletic, and a champion. The Texas Longhorns rode Young’s arm and legs to the National Championship just months before he was selected in the NFL Draft.

But when Young got to the NFL. suddenly things weren’t so easy. He quickly showed he had trouble reading defenses and making quick decisions. But, in his first season, he used his running ability to make plays and to lead the Titans offense to a few points. With a strong Titans’ defense, Tennessee made it to the playoffs.

But since that first season, Young has been average at times and downright horrible at other times. Young was so used to success and to winning easily that he didn’t handle the hardtimes well. So when he didn’t do well, he really couldn’t handle it.

Young’s bad play came to a head on Sunday when his own fans were booing him. And then he went down with a knee sprain. And on Monday his struggles came to a head. His friends and family called the Titans’ complex and asked them to locate Young because they were concerned about him.

The police ended-up locating him and everything was fine in Young’s life. But his play is still in question. As is his heart.

Sure, the Titans are saying all the right things. And Young is now saying all the right things too. But the Titans have to worried that they made a huge investment in a quarterback that is much more like a running back than a quarterback. they have to be worried that they have Michael Vick II – minus the incredible speed and the ability to throw a decent pass once in a while.

But Vince Young needs to believe in himself, even if all the fans don’e. He has to man-up. He has to compete and drag his way up the ladder to a place where he can not only make plays with his legs, but also with his arm.

Does he have the heart to do it? He must, he won the National Championship pretty much on his own. But he may not allow his heart to take over because he’s allowed that heart to get broken by fickle fans and complex defenses.
