MLB: Here Come the Dodgers and the Phillies

Posted on | September 6, 2008 | No Comments

Yesterday I took a few minutes to write about the match-ups between the top 2 teams in the NL East and the NL West. I wrote that the Phillies could put a lot of pressure on the Mets if they win the series and the Dodgers could actually take over first place over the D-Backs if they swept. I also wrote that the Mets and the D-Backs had a chance to put themselves in a great position to win the division if they could their own series.

Well, the first game went in the favor of the second place teams.

The New York Mets have to be very nervous as they wake-up on Saturday morning. How can they not think of their historic collapse last year? And now here they sit just 2 games ahead of the Philadelphia Phillies. That’s much less than the lead they had last year when they blew it. And with the hurricane expected to rip up the east coast and drench New York City, it doesn’t look like the Mets and Phillies will play on Saturday. So the Mets will have an extra day to think about everything. Not good for them.

Meanwhile, it’s very hard to remember that the Arizona Diamondbacks once held the best record in baseball and once held an enormous early season lead. All that is gone now and their lead is just about gone too. It what will be the last scheduled meeting for the Dodgers and the D-Backs this season, the Dodgers took the first game of the series. That pulled the Dodgers within a half game of the lead. So the Dodgers could go to bed tonight with the lead in the NL West. If they do, I think they’ll keep chugging along and win the division.

While things are very exciting in the NL East and the NL West, it looks like the NL Central may still be up in the air. The Chicago Cubs have lost six straight games and they allowed the Milwaukee Brewers to pull within four games. If not for some recent bad baseball on the Brewers part, the lead in the Nl Central would be much smaller.

So perhaps we’ll have exciting finishes in all three divisions in the National League. Things are certainly exciting this weekend.
