MLB: Who’s In and Who’s Almost In

As we hit the unofficial end of summer with Labor Day, now is a great time to take another look at which teams are in the playoffs and which teams are about to get there. We’ll also take a look at the teams that are done. To do this, let’s take a look at each division.

In the American League East the Tampa Bay Rays are 5.5 games up on the Red Sox. The Rays are definately in the playoffs (because they’ll get the Wild Card even if the Red Sox somehow catch them). Most likely the Red Sox aren’t going to win the division but they have a good shot at the Wild Card. But that’s not a given either. Either the White Sox or the Twins could take that away from them. The Red Sox currently lead the Wild Card by 2.5 games. The Yankees, the Blue Jays, and the Orioles are all done.

In the Al Central the White Sox and the Twins are battling it out for the division. The White Sox currently hold a half game lead. Whoever loses the division will have a shot at winning the Wild Card. The Tigers, Indians, and Royals are all done.

In the AL West the Angels have the playoffs wrapped up. The Rangers, the A’s, and the Mariners are all finished.

Over in the National League East the New York Mets currently hold a one game lead over the Philadelphia Phillies. The loser will go home. The Marlins gave it a go but they’re fading now. The Braves and Nationals are done.

In the NL Central, the Cubs are pulling away and will win the division. The Brewers should win the Wild Card. The Cardinals, the Astros, the Reds, and the Pirates are all done.

Over in the NL West, there isn’t a good team in the mix. However, the Dodgers just won two big games against the D-Backs so they are now just 2.5 back. Yes, the Dodgers are 3 games under .500 but only 2.5 games behind the Arizona Diamondbacks. I still like the Dodgers with Torre as the manager and Manny being Manny (clutch hits, etc.). But we will see. Both of these teams may be below average but they might just provide the most excitement through September and into October. The Rockies, the Giants, and the Padres are all done and they’re also lucky there’s no “mercy” rule in baseball of their season would already be over.
