Mets and Phillies Ready for Showdown

Here we go.
There’s about a month a half left in the 2008 baseball season and not too much has been decided. Sure, the AL West is decided. The Anaheim Angels will easily coast to winning that division. The AL East and the NL Central are pretty much over too. Not completely but pretty much. Which leaves us with the NL West, the AL Central, and the NL East.
And in the NL East there’s about to be a major showdown. The New York Mets are about to take on the Philadelphia Phillies.
As this series opens up in in Philadephia the Phillies trail the Mets by just a half game. And as I wrote yesterday, the Mets better be nervous.
Last year’s epic collapase still has to be fresh in the minds of te Mets. They have to remember how they had the NL East wrapped-up and then they experienced a collapse unlike any other collapse in the history of baseball.
But maybe they can use that as motivation?
Maybe they will exact their revenge. Maybe they’ll widen their margin in the NL East and begin to pull away from the Phillies. Maybe.
But maybe not.
Maybe the Phillies will come-up with a sweep and run right past the Mets. Or maybe the Phillies will take the series and lead the series as the teams part ways just before the end of August. Who knows?
But if the Mets hope to win this division, they better make a good showing in this series. Otherwise, doubt can become their worst enemy.
And that’s a little preview of the biggest series in baseball involving a New York team. No, I don’t care about the Boston Red Sox and New York Yankees series. Okay, I care a little because of the whoel last time at Yankee Stadium thing but that’s about it. Just a little.
