MLB: Mets Should be Nervous

Posted on | August 25, 2008 | No Comments

If I were the New York Mets, I might be more than a little nervous. Sure, they’ve been playing good baseball. And they seem be in good hands with their new manager, Jerry Manuel. But if the New York Mets think the Philadelphia Phillies are just going to go away then they couldn’t be more wrong.

As the New York Mets wake-up on Monday morning, they find the Philadelphia Phillies just a half game behind them. And that’s a lot closer then last year.

And last year is the very reason why the Mets should be very nervous. Because the Mets looked for all the world like they were going to win the NL East last year and then they had an historic collapse and they lost the division.

I get that the Mets got rid of their manager from last year, Wilie Randolph, and that the Mets think they’re ready to finish strong. But these Mets are still pretty much the same as last year’s Mets. Not too much has changed.

So the Mets better be nervous. They better be very nervous. Because while the Mets have to nervous because of last year’s collapse the Phillies have to have a lot of confidence because of last year’s surge. So though these teams won’t admit it, they both have mindsets and the Mets’ mindset must be negative while the Phillies mindset has to be much more positive.

So as September comes ever closer, the NL East is getting so close that it’s anyone’s divison. And even if the Mets had a five game lead on the Phillies (which is about what the Mets lead the Florida Marlins by) then they wouldn’t be comfortable. But their lead is a mere half game right now. And the Phillies could actually take over first place on Monday night. That’s got to be too close for the Mets.
