MLB: Rays Pulling Away, AL Wildcard Too Close to Call

The Boston Red Sox are the defending World Series Champions. And the way things were looking at the beginning of this season (and the off season too) it looked like the Red Sox were one of the favorites, if not THE favorite.
The Boston Red Sox started off the season playing very well. They looked like they were the team everyone expected them to be. But the surprising Tampa Bay Rays were also playing great baseball and they were keeping close contact with the Red Sox.
Well, eventually the Rays overtook the Red Sox. And now here they are, as August begins to wind down, leading the AL East. In fact, as they head into Sunday, the Rays are now leading the division by five and a half games. And with the way the Rays are playing, and the fact that there are only about thirty-five games left, it looks like the Rays will win the AL East.
So that leaves the Boston Red Sox looking at the Wild Card. And since they are so good (and they have been quite good this year too) they’ll easily grab the Wildcard, right? Well, not so fast.
The Chicago White Sox are only a half game behind the Red Sox. And since the White Sox are just a half game behind the Minnesota Twins in the AL Central then the Twins may end-up beating out the Red Sox too. And then there is the New York Yankees who are just five games back too.
So the Wild Card could be very crazy over the next month or so. And while the Rays seem to be pretty comfortable atop the AL East, the Boston Red Sox are in real danger of missing the playoffs all together.
