MLB: D-Backs and Dodgers are Battling

The Los Angeles Dodgers pulled off one of the big trades and they got Manny Ramirez but it didn’t do them any good on Friday night. The Dodgers are in the middle of a very important series against the Arizona Diamondbacks and they lost on Friday by a score of 2-1. Randy Johnson was on the mound for the D-Backs and he was dominant.
The loss dropped the Dodgers to three games behind the Diamondbacks. So now the Dodgers really need to win the last two games of this series to stay close to the D-Backs. If Arizona wins the next two games then they will open up a 5 game lead and that will be huge. Not impossible for the Dodgers to overcome but certainly not a position that the Dodgers want to put themselves in right now.
The D-Backs are a really tough team to figure out. On paper they have a really good team. But that doesn’t matter too much – just ask the Detroit Tigers or the Seattle Mariners. The D-Backs started off red-hot, easily the hottest team in the Majors. Then they morphed into one of the worst teams in the Majors. And now they suddenly look really good again.
So who knows which D-Backs team will show-up on Saturday or the next day or the day after that. But right now they own a 3 game lead in the AL West and they are back to 5 games over .500. So Manny and the Dodgers need to step-up and win the next 2 games or things won’t look very good for Los Angeles’ chances in the NL West.
I still think the D-Backs are just too inconsistent to win the NL West and I like Joe Torre’s chances in a division that doesn’t have a team that plays consistently good ball. But the D-Backs are so far proving me wrong in this series against the Dodgers.
