MLB: Central Divisions Looking the Strongest
Posted on | July 7, 2008 | No Comments
Coming into this season, many baseball fans believed that the AL Central was going to be a dogfight. When looking at that division, there were four very solid teams – the Chaicago White Sox, the Minnesota Twins, the Detroit Tigers, and the Cleveland Indians – that looked poised to contend for the AL crown. Though it didn’t always look solid, now the AL Central is looking like a powerful division again. And they’re joined by their counterparts in the National League.
It was only a couple months ago when the AL Central looked like it might be one of the worst divisions in baseball. The Tigers were horrible, the Twins were struggling, and the White Sox were too inconsistent. The Indians looked decent at times too but they also looked horrible sometimes. Well, the Indians have now fallen off the map and waved the white flag, but the other three teams have caught fire. The White Sox are barely leading the division but they went from a .500 team to 14 games over .500. The Twins are on a tear having won 18 of their last 21 games. The Tigers have gone from 12 games under .500 to .500 in about 3 weeks.
So now the fun begins. The Tigers still have a lot of work to do but they aren’t out of it. And the White Sox and the Twins are both looking like legitimate World Series contenders.
Meanwhile. the NL Central is easily the best division in the National League. The Chicago Cubs are the best team in the NL. Then the Milwaukee Brewers (currently trailing the Cubbies by 3.5 games) just might be the second best team in the NL. And they just acquired CC Sabathia from the Cleveland Indians. Then the St Louis Cardinals are only 3.5 games back and tied with the Brewers. So this is a solid division too.
