MLB: Two Big Series to Start July
Posted on | July 1, 2008 | No Comments
As we roll into July (Where did June go?) the baseball season is really heating up. And the Tampa Bay Rays are still right at the top. As everyone continues to expect them to fall off, they continue to win games in bunches and they now lead the AL East by a game and a half. They increased their lead to 1.5 by beating second place Boston on Monday night. The Tampa Bay – Boston series is one of the 2 big series that’s going on right now.
As if the drama of the 1 and 2 teams in the AL East playing wasn’t enough, we also have to be on the lookout for fights since the last time these two teams played there was a bench-clearing brawl. And I mean a real one. Not just one of those where the players spill out on the field and jaw at each other and maybe shove a little. This brawl was complete with punches and body slams.
As I said just after the fight, it was a good thing for the Rays. Yes, they were just about to get swept by the Red Sox but it showed that they didn’t care who the Red Sox were. The Rays showed they were going to stick-in no matter what. And now the Red Sox have really gotten the message. And they are showing the they can be beaten. And the Rays are standing-up and showing that they deserve to be at the top of the AL right now. It will be fun to see how the next 2 games of this series play out.
The other big series in the AL too, but this one isn’t for first place. This one features probably the 2 hottest teams in the Majors right now – the Minnesota Twins and the Detroit Tigers. These teams started out slowly but not they’ve turned it on. They’ve both gained major ground on the AL Central leading Chicago White Sox. In fact, the Tigers have made-up 7 games in about 3 weeks thanks to a record of 18-4.
On Monday the Tigers continued their winnign ways with a come from behind 5-4 victory over the Twins in Minnesota. If the Tigers can win this series that would be huge. But it would be just as big for the Twins who are just 2.5 games behind the White Sox even after last night’s loss. This will be a great series to keep an eye on as well.
