MLB: D-Backs and Red Sox Battling It Out

Posted on | June 24, 2008 | No Comments

Well, the Arizona Diamondbacks certainly have their share of problems. After starting out the season red-hot they’ve now fallen back to looking like an ordinary team – if that. But they’re going against the defending World Series Champions right now and they’ve got a lot to prove. The D-Backs are visiting the Boston Red Sox. A series win at Fewway would do a lot to put this team back on the right track.

On Monday night both teams had one of their better pitchers on the mound. The Red Sox had Josh Beckett on the mound while the D-Backs had Dan Haren pitching. In the end the D-Backs won the game 2-1 thanks to the great pitching by Haren. Beckett threw the ball very well too but he just couldn’t quite get the job done.

The win for the D-Backs moves them to 4 games ahead of the Los Angeles Dodgers in the National League West. Meanwhile things have gotten more interesting in the American League East. With the loss the Red Sox own a very slim 1 game lead over the second place Tampa Bay Rays.

The American League Central and the National League East join the AL East a divisions where there’s a heck of a race going right now. The White Sox sit atop the AL Central as they begin a series at the Dodgers on Tuesday night. The second place Minnesota Twins are just a game and a half back and they’re also on the West Coast – at San Diego. But don’t overlook the Detroit Tigers who have clawed their way back to just five games back. The Tigers are at home to begin a series against the St. Louis Cardinals.

In the AL East the division-leading Philadelphia Phillies have lost 5 straight and they’ll be at the Oakland A’s. Second place Florida is just a game back and they’ll be hosting the Tampa Bay Rays. That should be a great series.
