MLB: Can the NL West Really Be This Bad?

Posted on | June 22, 2008 | No Comments

Can the NL West really be this bad? I mean at their current rate the team who wins this division will be about 10 games under .500. Although that may seem like a joke, it’s not. And it really might happen.

The Arizona Diamondbacks are currently in first place but they’ve been playing about .300 ball for the past month. That’s right, the team that was everyone’s darling about 2 months ago is now by far the worst team that’s at the top of their division. In fact, I’d have to say that the D-Backs have to be considered one of the seven or eight worse teams in the NL right now. Yet they still lead the NL West by 3.5 games.

The Los Angeles Dodgers check-in in second place and they are still 5 games under .500. Yet they’re only 3.5 games out of first. Then the Colorado Rockies and San Francisco are tied for third place. They are just seven games back but they’re also 12 games under .500. Finally the basement of the division is occupied by the San Diego Padres who are 13 games under .500 and 7.5 games out of first.

Overall this division has been absolutely horrible and they seem to be getting worse. At least the D-Backs are getting worse. If they had just played .500 ball after their hot start then they’d be looking at about a 10 game lead right now. Instead, what we have in the NL West is a bunch of teams who are playing horrible baseball. At least they get to play each other soon so that some team has to win a few more games.
