MLB: Interleague Play
Posted on | June 16, 2008 | No Comments
We’ve gotten back to that part of the seaon when teams from the American League play teams from the National League. Even though this has happened for a few years now, I still hear baseball purists grumble in unison when this time of year swings around. Well, I actually like interleague play.
The first reason I like interleague play is because it gives us all chances to see intriguing match-ups that could only possibly take place in the World Series without interleague play. The New York Yankess battle it out with the New York Mets. The LA Dodgers play the Anaheim Angels. And the Chicago Cubs play the Chicago White Sox. And that’s just a few of the more prominent match-ups. There are many other entertaining series to watch too.
Another great thing to watch is the American League pitchers trying to bat when they’re in the National League parks. Not only is that entertainment in itself but it’s fun to watch the American League managers change their managing styles to suit the National League way of playing. And that same fun can be had watching the National League managers change their ways to suit the American League way of playing. It’s also fun to watch the NL send a DH to the plate.
Many other “fans” actually complain that the baseball season is too long. I think this is crazy but for those people interleague play offers a few weeks of something different. It offers a break from the days and days and days of baseball.
So as the teams battle each other from differerent leagues we’d like to think that perhaps we’ll get a preview of the World Series, and maybe we will. But the more important thing is that we get to see how the league’s really stack up. In the last couple of years the American League has been much better, but we’ll see how this year goes.
