MLB: Rays Showing Fight

Posted on | June 10, 2008 | No Comments

A few days ago the Tampa Bay Rays got swept by the Boston Red Sox. But the series wasn’t all bad for the Rays. Why? Because the Rays showed that they are willing to fight the Red Sox for the division title. And I do mean fight.

In the last game of the series between the Red Sox and the Rays a bench-clearing brawl broke out. I’m not talking about one of these “bench-clearing” brawls where the players all run out and grab each other and maybe push a little bit. Once in a while a couple of the players will get a little brave and begin jawing at each other as they’re restrained by teammates and coaches. In these situations it seems that the more people who stand between the guys who are yapping at each other, the more yapping that takes place.

I’m talking about a brawl that included punches being thrown and bodies being tackled to the ground. Rays’ pitcher James Shields hit Red Sox hitter Coco Crisp with a pitch and it was on. Crisp charged the mound, Shields threw a haymaker, Crisp moved back out of the way and then threw a punch himself. The benches cleared and many more punches were thrown too.

Now, the Rays can’t be happy with the fact that they lost three straight games. However, they did show the mighty Red Sox that they may be young and inexperineced but they aren’t going to back down. In other words, although the bully on the block beat up the new kid on the block, the new kid showed that he’s not going anywhere and is willing to battle it out for supremacy.
