MLB: Interleague Play Begins

Posted on | May 17, 2008 | No Comments

Every year one of the most intruguing match-ups in Interleague play is the New York Yankees against the New York Mets. The first game between the Yankees and the Mets was postponed on Friday night. That will set up a great showdown between Andy Petite and Johan Santana on Saturday afternoon.

But of course there were many other games that were played on Friday night.

The Arizona Diamondbacks continued to play great baseball and to win games. They got a flurry of late runs to beat the poor Tigers 4-3. And yes, in case you were wondering, Gary Sheffield was horrendous once again. He was pulled early for Matt Joyce. Maybe he’ll stay on the bench forever.

The Tampa Bay Rays stayed on top of the American League East with a win over the St. Louis Cardinals. Actually the Rays were able to extend their lead to a game and a half because the Boston Red Sox still haven’t played a game in like a week and a half (okay it’s only been 3 days but 3 days? Is this their All-Star Break). Anyway, the Rays love that the Red Sox aren’t playing because they just keep stacking up those half games and now they have more than a game lead.

Meanwhile, look out for the Kansas City Royals all of a sudden. They have won 5 in a row now and they’ve pulled to within a game and a half of the lead in the AL Central. You know, I joked a couple days ago about the Rays being in first place being a sign of the apocolypse. Well, if the Royals get into first place too then I will seriously be concerned. I mean to the point where I might grab a big sign, write on it that the end if near, and go out and walk down some busy street.

But with the Royals getting hot, there are now just four teams seperated by one and half games in the AL Central. So things are very interesting there.

Things are also interesting in the NL East where the Philies and the Marlins are tied for first and the Mets and the Braves are just two games back. This is a division that has been fun to watch and should continue to be fun to watch all the way to October.
