Best Division in Baseball?

Posted on | May 17, 2008 | No Comments

While we prepare for Interleague play to begin once again, I thought now might be a good time to take a look at which division in baseball is the best.

AT the beginning of this year the general consensus was probably the the American League Central was the best in baseball. They have the AL runner-ups Cleveland Indians, the Detroit Tigers, the Chicago White Sox, and the Minnesota Twins. Well, this division is far from the best and it may be one of the worst. The Indians are starting to look decent but the rest of the teams are too inconsistent. Except for the Tigers are who are consistently horrible. In fact, the Tigers may be the most underachieving club in the history of baseball.

The AL East is looking pretty good. Boston is solid (obviously), the Rays are looking very good, the Blue Jays have very good pitching and the Orioles ae 2 games over .500.

The AL West isn’t in the running. The Angels and the A’s are okay but not great. The Rangers are bad and the Mariners are even worse.

Over in the NL East the Marlins have made this division look a lot better. The Philies and the Mets are both above .500 and the Braves are sitting right at .500. So this division has 4 very solid teams.

The NL Central has five teams that are above, at, or just below .500. The Cubs are leading rhe division, the surprising Astros are in second, and then the Cards are in third place at 5 games over .500. The Brewers and the Pirates are just 1 game below .500.

Then the NL West has the team that I think is the best in basebal. That’s the Arizona Diamonbacks. And the Dodgers are a good team too. But the rest of the division isn’t any good.

So right now I would have to say that the NL Central is the best division in baseball – from top to bottom. That’s followed probably by the American League East. I mean the Yankees are in the basement right now and they are a decent team if not a good team.

Of course all this could change in pretty much a couple weeks or so. But righ now that’s how things look as interleague play opens for the 2008 season.
