MLB: Is this for Real?

Well, we continue to roll along in the Major league baseball season. And as we do we keep saying “it’s too early to do this or that” or we say “the season’s still young…” or something similar. At some point we need to stop qualifying statements like that and we need to accept the season for what it is.

Now, before we go any further I do need to make one more qualifying statement: The season is long and a team can collapse late or get on a tear after the All Star Break and make it into the playoffs even after a horrible start. But so far this is the way things are looking.

The Boston Red Sox are very good again. They have the peieces they need to win it all. Yes, they’ve hit some bumps in the road but they’re still very good and they know how to win. But the Tampa Bay Rays have been playing great ball. At some point we’ll have to accept them as true contenders for the Wild Card but I’m not quite ready to do that yet.

The Minnesota Twins are about what everyone though they’d be - maybe slightly better. However, the Cleveland Indians and the Detroit Tigers are much worse than they were supposed to be. The Tigers are the real surprise here. Maybe they’ll get it together but there’s now a real possibility that they won’t. And if they plan to get it together they better get started after this Yankees series.

The Oakland A’s are pretty good and the Angels are too. This will be a fight.

The Florida Marlins have some out of nowhere and are playing great ball. They are one of the teams that makes you wonder if they can keep it up. They lead the Mets in the NL East right now. The Mets have been a disappointment.

In the NL Central it looks like the Cards and the Cubs will be battling it out. The Cubs were supposed to be there, the Cards were not.

Finally, in the NL West the D-Backs started off on fire but they’ve hit a snag. They’ve lost 7 of their last 10. And if not for the Dodgers hitting a skid themselves this division would be a lot closer. Look out for the Giants surprising everyone and possibly becoming a player in this division too.

That’s where we are. But I’m not quite ready to say this is how things will always be - that this is the “real” season. I’m close to saying it but not quite there.
