On Friday night there were a lot of exciting games on the baseball diamond. In fact, there were 4 walk-off victories and another near last at-bat win.
The near walk-off was between the Detroit Tigers and the New York Yankees. After building a 6-2 lead, the Tigers nearly blew it. The Yankees pulled within 6-5 and had runners at first and second with two outs when first baseman Sandy Duncan flew out to centerfield.
Perhaps the most exciting game of the day was between the Minnesota Twins and the Boston Red Sox. The Red Sox seemed to be in control of the game when they went into the bottom of the ninth with a six to five lead. The Sox sent Jonathon Papelbon to the mound - their closer who is one of the best in the business. However, on Friday night it wasn’t his night.
Papelbon gave-up two hits, a walk, and (most importantly) two runs in the bottom of the ninth. That was the second blown save for Papelbon and he’s actually blown back-to-back saves now. It will be interesting to see if this becomes a story as we move forward into the season.
Meanwhile, the other walk-off wins were the Milwaukee Brewers over the St Louis Cardinals, the Pittsburgh Pirates over the Atlanta Braves, and the Tampa Bay Rays defeated the Anaheim Angels. In that one Evan Longoria hit a two run homer to lead the Rays to a two to zero win over the Angels.
All of these teams will continue to battle it out over the weekend. And all the games should continue to be entertaining.
Also, watch out for the Chicago Cubs playing the Arizona Diamondbacks and the Los Angeles Dodgers playing against the Houston Astros. The Astros are over .500 and the Dodgers have been hot lately. There will be a battle here to see who can stay hot and who will take a step back.
