MLB: Dodgers Still Red-Hot, The Diamondbacks Not

Okay, so I was wrong. I thought the Arizona Diamondbacks would run away with the National league West. In fact, I thought it had a really good chance of being over by the beginning of June. That’s the way things looked. But noy anymore.

I guess it just took awhile for Joe Torre to get the Los Angeles Dodgers going. And now that he does have them going… look out! The Dodgers have won 9 of their last 10 and they went from being out of it and fading fast to being just 3 games back.

Of course such a quick assent has to be aided by the first place team faltering. And that’s exactly what’s happened with the Arizona Diamondbacks. While the Dodgers have been winning non-stop, the Diamondbacks have suddenly begun to play .500 ball. And they’ve watched their 6 game lead get cut in half in about a week’s time.

Even with the D-Backs stumbling a bit over the last 10 days or so, they still own the best record in the Majors. And they simply have too much talent for anyone to think that they won’t get back to playing really good ball again. So the Dodgers better continue to play well if they want even a Wild Card spot because the Diamondbacks aren’t going to give-up the division easily. That I know for sure. But then again, I was wrong about how easily the D-Backs would run away from the rest of the NL West. So I could be wrong now too.

Meanwhile, the Tigers are still playing horrendously. And don’t look now but Gary Sheffield went hitless again. How bad does a player have to be and for how long until he’s dealt away or optioned? Apparently really bad for a very long time. It makes me wonder if there is any limit at all.

And one more thing, the D-Backs no longer have the largest lead in their division. That now belongs to the Boston Red Sox, the team that’s playing the currently hapless Tigers. The Red Sox lead the AL East by 3.5 games.
