There are many storylines out there that can be written about this 2008 baseball season so far.
Barry Bonds, the all-time homers champion (sort of) is still out of work. The Marlins and the Rays are playing better baseball then anyone dared dream they would, including them - I’m sure. And Brandon Webb and the Arizona Diamondbacks have been even better than most thought they would be - and most thought they’d be pretty good.
But if one storyline needed to be found to sum-up this season so far, it would have to be the ups and downs that every team seems to be going through.
Every single division in baseball has teams who’ve played great then played lousy and then played great again. And most division have every team suffering from this.
Let’s look at the American league East. The Boston Red Sox started out bad, then hit a hot streak and catapulted to the front of the division. Then they lost about 7 in a row and nearly sunk into the basement of th division. However, now they’re winning again and they’ve opened up a 3 games lead. That’s helped by the fact that the Baltimore Orioles and the Tampa Bay Rays have hit slumps again. However, look out for the Yankees and the Blue Jays because they’ve pulled out of their slumps and they’re also reeling off wins.
Then look at the Los Angeles Dodgers. They started out poorly. But then they rattled off 8 straight wins. Sure they lost last night but they’re still only 4 games behind the Diamondbands and the Dodgers have still won 8 of 10.
Every division has similar stories to tell. It will probably be the first team that can avoid slumps, get a few winning streaks going, and then play about .500 ball the rest of the time that will win each division.
We shall see…
