MLB: Are the Yankees in Trouble?

Don’t look now but all those New York fans who were screaming for Joe Torre to be fired as Yankees manager last year, may want to hit the rewind button. They got what they wanted and now that might be even worse.

Joe Torre walked away from the Yankees last Fall and stepped into a job managing the Los Angeles Dodgers - yes the same Dodgers who have now won 6 straight games.

Meanwhile, the Yankees just got swept by the Detroit Tigers at Yankee Stadium for the first time in decades. Will Yankees fans now begin to cry-out for the release of new manager Joe Girardi?

I know. The Yankees have a lot of injuries. Yes, I get it. They’re without Alex Rodriguez and Posada. They have injuries to their starting pitching. Yes, I get it.

But what team doesn’t have injuries? Look no further than the Detroit Tigers who have played their entire season without their two best relievers and most of the season without their star leadoff man and without one of their starting pitchers. Yet somehow the Tigers have managed to claw they way back. But the Tigers still have a lot of fire power. And that might be the real Yankees problem.

The Yankees simply don’t have any guys who are stepping up right now and their line-up isn’t scaring anyone. Put A-Rod and Posada back in and the line-up still isn’t that scarey.

Derek Jeter is still repected but his bat doesn’t scare anyone any more. Robinson Cano is in a slump and still hasn’t proven himself as a great player. Matsui is too inconsistent. Giambi needs to retire. Jonny Damon seems to be doing what he’s always done - making plays to help the Red Sox.

So who is feared? Abreu? A little. Sandy Duncan? Come on. She was scarier when she was on 80s sitcoms.

I wouldn’t even consider Posada dangerous but some might. So even without injuries we’re looking at two, maybe three, players who actually make opposing pitchers nervous. That’s just not enough. In contrast the Tigers have six and maybe seven.

Then throw in a pitching staff that is too young or too old, except for Wang. And what you have is a team that will finish above .500 but probably not much above that.

So are the Yankees in trouble? Well, if you mean will they finish in the basement of the division then the anwer is “no”. But if you mean will they make the playoffs then I would have to say the answer to that is the same. “No.”

I do think the Yankees are in trouble. Their offense is not nearly as potent as it has been in previous years, they only have two consistently good starters, and the AL east is much better with Baltimore and Tampa Bay not being easy wins anymore.
