MLB: D-Backs Keep Rolling and Look Out AL Central?

Posted on | April 19, 2008 | No Comments

The teams in the National League West (except for the Arizona Diamondbacks) better look out. The D-Backs just might run away with the division before June even rolls around. Here we are in mid-April and the current lead atop the division is four games.

The D-Backs won again on Friday night – this time they crushed the San Diego Padres nine to nothing. This game wasn’t even close as the D-Backs showed just how much of a superior team they are.

Now, obviously there are lots of ups and downs in every season and the D-Backs have certainly been on an up so far this season. There will be some downs. However, if the D-Backs keep playing the way they have been early in the season, they will build such a huge lead that a couple downs won’t matter.

Speaking of downs, the Detroit Tigers begin the season on a major down. They lost their first seven games of the season. They weren’t hitting and they weren’t pitching. For that matter, they weren’t playing defense either. And all this after many people predicted they’d go to the World Series.

Well, the Tigers are beginning to come around now., They’ve won four of their last five games and their bats are coming alive. Miguel Cabrera is crushing the ball and Maglio Ordonez and Carlos Guillen are hitting the ball too. Even Gary Sheffield is beginning to hit the ball more.

Meanwhile one of the best players in the league last year, Curtis Granderson, is just about ready to come back to the Tigers. He had his first rehab stint last night and went two for four. He said he felt slow and off so he probably won’t be back with the Tigers on Monday. However, he should be back by the middle of next week. That will put the Tigers line-up together for the first time all year. And it should make them even better with Granderson leading off rather then Pudge Rodriguez who has little speed and a mediocre on-base percentage.
