La Liga: Sevilla vs. Zaragoza

Posted on | February 21, 2008 | 1 Comment

Sevilla have had to drag themselves back from Turkey this week after losing the first leg of the Champions league knock out competition to Fenerbahce. They fell by three goals to two and have it all to do in the second leg a week from now at the Sanchez Pizjuan stadium. It isn’t all that bad a result and they should be glad to have been able to score two goals in a very hostile environment. Now they must turn their attention to the league and this quite difficult match with Zaragoza.
The visitors travel to Sevilla knowing that they need the three points to get well and truly away from the relegation zone. At present, Zaragoza are tenth in the league and five points above third from bottom club Deportivo de la Coruña. But they are also five points from ninth placed Valencia and if they still have any European ambitions at all they need to start winning again. New coach Javier Irureta’s reign started well enough with a two – two away to Racing de Santander and then with a home win over Athletic Bilbao, but in the last two league games they have fallen to Osasuna and last weekend to Barcelona, although the club is still funing over the two Barcelona goals that were more thanks to the referee than the players.
This game will surely see plenty of goals as the two clubs both have the best strike partnership practically anywhere in Europe at the moment. For Sevilla, Luis Fabiano and Kanoute have scored twenty six times this season, while Diego Milito and Ricardo Oliveira have netted twenty four times. When you think that Sevilla as a team have scored forty six goals and Zaragoza twenty seven, you begin to see that these four will play an immense part in the outcome of this match.
I’m going for a home win here, basically because Sevilla at home are much more stable and solid defensively than when they play away from home, and their strikers really know how to exploit the counterattack. Zaragoza should put up quite a fight though, and I doubt if they will go home without scoring a goal or two.
Prediction: Home win (3-2)
