La Liga: Racing de Santander vs. Atlético Madrid

This is a big game for Racing de Santander and one which Atlético Madrid can’t afford to lose. Both teams have entered a bad run and neither has been able to win a league match from the last three attempts. Racing lost to Barcelona at the Nou Camp, then surprisingly drew at home to Zaragoza and away last weekend to Levante. Atlético have fared a little bit worse though. After losing the Madrid derby to Real at home, they went on to lose away at Mallorca and draw their last match at home to Murcia. One point from a possible nine has seen them slip from third to fifth in the league and they really need a win here if they want to continue their dream of playing Champions league football. Another big problem for the Madrid side is the loss of Sergio ‘El Kun’ Agüero with an ankle injury. He will be out for the next ten days but is trying his best to get fit as soon as possible and could even have minutes against Racing. Jurado, Simao and Seitaridis are also doubtful. Agüero’s His strike partner, Diego Forlan, is having something of a goal drought at the moment and this shows as they have scored just twice in their last four games.
The Spanish press has been making lots of noise this week about the negotiations between Racing’s Argentinean central defender Garay and Barcelona. He is expected to leave the Cantabrian club at the end of the season and all this media attention could affect his game.
I’m going for a home win here. Racing have been very strong on their home soil all season and I can’t see Atlético Madrid changing that. Racing are also aware that Sevilla are breathing down their necks and are only two points behind, will want to go out and keep their UEFA cup spot for another week.
Prediction: Home win (2-1)
