NFL Football: The Calm before the Storm

We still have a little over a week until the Super Bowl and a few days before the hype really kicks-up a notch. Soon the media will cover both teams landing in Arizona (the place for the Super Bowl) and they’ll cover media day and all the other stuff that surrounds the spectacle that is the many days long pre-game extravaganza. But for now, we just have the bits and pieces of news coming out of the Giants and the Patriots camps and we even the lesser teams making coaching moves.
One of the more interesting developments is the Miami Dolphins basically reassembling the Dallas Cowboys from two years ago. The Dolphins hired former Cowboys’ coach Bill Parcells as their man in charge of football operations (ie GM – except not the GM). Then they took one of Dallas’ main scouts, Jeff Ireland, and hired him as they GM. Then they hired Dallas’ offensive line coach as their Head Coach. Next they took Todd Bowles and Paul Pasqualoni from the Dallas coaching staff. Plus they took a couple more scouts from the Cowboys.
So Parcells has certainly robbed a lot of man power from the Cowboys but I’m not so sure Dallas cares. Yes the Cowboys have a highly talented team (with 12 Pro Bowlers) and yes Parcells and Ireland played a major role in this but they never really won anything in Dallas. Parcells actual in-game coaching never really translated to a consistent team and Sparano’s offensive line really fell apart in the last couple of games for the Cowboys.
Bottom line, Miami will be much better off with all the people they hired recently. But Dallas will be too. Everyone that left was part of Parcell’s regime and I think Wade Phillips will do much better with his own guys replacing the guys that left. Where Dallas will be hurt will be with drafting. But they have enough young talent so that they should be able to be okay for at least a few years. Plus they have two #1 picks this year too, that will always make a draft a little easier.
Some other teams are making moves too. The Falcons found their coach, the Redskins announced they won’t be making a decision on a coach anytime soon, and the Raiders are looking to ditch their 1st year coach, Lane Kiffin. What is Al Davis thinking? The Raiders took a huge stride forward this year. Could Al have someone waiting in the wings? Umm, one more thing to think about as we all wait for the real fun to begin next week.
