La Liga: Getafe vs. Sevilla

Getafe’s downward slump continued at the weekend with a three – two defeat away to Betis. They now find themselves precariously placed in the league table in fifteenth spot and just one point above the relegation zone. They are having a very irregular season this year and coach Michael Laudrup is fighting for control. The basic problem is that Getafe doesn’t have the squad to maintain the quality and style of play in the two domestic competitions as well as the UEFA cup. Of course, having two or three or your best players leaving in the close season doesn’t help things much, either, and it is doubtful the club will dip into the winter transfer market. This midweek is the return leg of the King’s cup that Getafe has to play against Levante. In the first leg, Getafe won by three goals to nil at Levante’s Ciutat de Valencia stadium, so Laudrup will no doubt give some of his players the night off and let his reserve players have a run out.
Sevilla are in a similar situation as Getafe, though not so dramatic. Yet. Their away record is the second worst in the present league, and only bottom team Levante has lost more games away from home. In fact, the only game Sevilla has won away from their Sanchez Pizjuan stadium was against Levante in mid October. So this could be the perfect time to change things around. They currently occupy the eighth spot in the league and are six points off a UEFA cup spot and a whopping ten points from the Champions league places. To make matters a little bit more complicated for Sevilla, the team has to play in the return leg of the King’s cup against Barcelona at the Nou Camp this Tuesday night. The first leg ended in a one one draw and neither team wants to be eliminated at this stage, so both teams will be using all their available talent. This is especially important considering that Daniel Alves is carrying a light ankle injury but will still play. Whether this will effect his involvement in the Getafe game is unknown at this stage, but it sure can’t do any good.
This match to me smells of a draw. Both teams have to play in midweek and will arrive for this game not in the best conditions. Moreover, a point would be better than nothing for Getafe and Sevilla, so I expect them both to be ultra defensive.
Prediction: Draw (0-0)
