How to choose a Sports book

Betting like lottery is good business and lots of fun for the adventurous investor.  Yes, investor – you are reading me correctly. Actually betting is every bit like the stock market in its behavior and returns. As you invest in the stock market, based on certain patented behavior of some commodity and company performance, so it betting done by judging the best odds from the information available. What you have to know is how and what is important when you decide where you are betting.

You need to take calculated risks.  It is possible to have a very high return from betting. However, this is not something a weak-hearted person should choose to do. There is tremendous tension and the results can be volatile to the extreme. Another very important “no-no” is that you should never invest too large amount on any particular one bet – however good it looks, however much any information points to it, or anyone tell you to. There are too many times when people are ruined because they chanced it all on one bet – which at that time seemed fail proof – but it wasn’t.

First of all you need to understand what you are doing. Green horns should be very cautious when entering this market because if you do not know what you are doing and bet here and there counting on lady luck to support you, you are in for some heavy disappointment. So, the most important and first on the priority list before choosing your sportsbook, is that you should understand what it is all about. A sportsbook is place where you place your bet and which processes your winnings and losses. Choosing a good sportsbook is definitely based on what and how much you know about betting.

So, let us start from the beginning. What is point spreads? Point spreads are the factors, which can balance a bet. Its aim is to keep the balance between the best placed on favorites and non-favorites as close together as possible. When this number becomes equal both sides, the book will be able to guarantee 10 per cent profit on the half of the total bets, irrespective which dies wins. And this is a good win-win situation.

The point’s spreads are what the bookkeeper uses when he feels that the bet has become to unstable, i.e. betting is tilting heavily to one side. In this way, what is called ‘the line’ becomes like an inverted V. In order to straighten this line – figuratively speaking, because what he actually does is balance the odds – the bookkeeper will promote the other side more heavily. This will balance the odds. The reason, the closer the bets are matched on both sides, the more the bookkeeper can assure of profit.

What else you should know? When is the best time to place a bet? A veteran will say when you are sure that you will win. There is a sixth sense telling you that this team will win – then jump and place your bet that same moment. But, today the intelligent betters will advice to use your head and not heart.

Find out the trends and follow the unfolding of the past events carefully. Which team is most likely, judging logically and with a cool mind, to win? Place your bet there. The trends would give the best information which points at what the odds are. Be careful and thorough when you look at the facts.

There are certain times (the right time) when placing a bet is less risky than other times. Place your bet as late in the game as possible. Why? Because with time passing and closer to the end, the trend of that particular game is more clear than in the beginning. Of course, you can still go wrong, but basically you will see the picture more accurately than you saw it in the beginning. And then you have a better chance to win.

Keep with the small bets in the beginning. Do your research very carefully when you choose the bets. Today sportsbooks are readily available online and have a large gamut of action to offer. You will find it possible to bet on absolutely everything you can imagine about and some you cannot even imagine. All the popular games of the world can be bet upon, there are also bets invited on popular TV shows dramas, and Internet games including simulations of horse racing, dog racing and many such other stuff.

With all this information we are back to the point where we started. How to choose a sportsbook? Well, there are few guidelines, which you will have to follow to ensure your financial security when you choose a site. When I speak of security, I mean you should be able to know whether the site you are doing financial transaction on is a secure site and that your credit card information is not hacked by anyone. You need to have an encrypter on the site like V-sign or others, which ensure that all the information passing through that site cannot be seen by anyone else on the Internet.

Another important point is to find out the location of the sportsbook, and whether it is legal for it to function where it functions. Betting begets good profits and many are tempted to bend corners to dip into the gravy train. If you are found on that gravy train at the wrong time, then you may end up with a lot of legal trouble. So, ensure that you check on the location and legal status before you enter into any contract with the site.

The third important aspect would be their repute. Are they having good reviews or feedback? Is it acknowledged by the watchdog bodies, which regulate the sportsbooks? Do they have a discussion for forum or troubleshooting or help button on their site, where you could approach them with your problems? If they do check it out and see how they react to difference scenarios. You will immediately learn whether they are good or not from the comments posted there.

Check also whether they have a good customer support back up. Are they prompt in replying in correcting complaints? Do they have continuous and uninterrupted server uptime? If you have find these question answering negative, avoid the site. Nothing can be more frustrating than you wanted to get on to the site for information or betting and not being able to do so.

Differentiate between land sportsbooks and online ones clearly. When you choose land sportbooks, stick to good brands. Online sportsbooks you can check and try, but for the land ones the best bets are the good brands. Online sportsbooks are in many ways better because the checking online can be more stringent. If you have to choose between a land based one and the online one, I would say, choose the online one.

Research on the game or whatever event you are betting on, thoroughly. There are many sites, which will accurately give you the odds right on the online sites itself. However, it is always good to use the hard facts and judge for yourself independently. Take a decision only when the majority of the facts point in one direction.

Be very careful about the millions of scams that are creeping in betting. Any sportsbook, which looks the least fishy, should be dropped like a hot brick.  This includes the following checklist, though the list is not by any means exhaustive:

  • Does not clearly indicate its location
  • Does not clearly indicate its legal status
  • Does not prominently display on its site a recognized and licensed credit card encryptor and/or secure online transaction sign
  • Does not have a landline phone number (this shows that the company is not permanent – so it is using only a cell – these are most likely to run a scam)
  •  Does not have a prompt customer support
  • Does not have a minimum 98 percent server uptime

To summarize, a good sportsbook will be one that is trustworthy and verifiable with clear facts. Check each and every fact yourself and only when you are satisfied with the outcome, place your bet.

A good sportsbook will ensure that you have not only a lot of fun, but also good profits. It will have its information organized and within your reach, it will ready to assist you in any difficulty and explain to you anything you do not understand, and facilitate your bets legally.
